The Junction 27 Energy Hub is a pioneering, new Battery Energy Storage project near Tiverton which will accelerate the transition to renewable energy, help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support Devon’s response to the climate emergency.

Battery Energy Storage is used to store green, renewable electricity when supply is greater than demand, for example in the middle of the night. This energy reserve is then put back onto the electricity network when demand is higher than supply, for example when the wind isn’t blowing.

Projects like these are urgently needed. With little storage capacity in the UK, wind turbines are currently turned off when renewable energy generation is higher than electricity demand. This led to energy equivalent to five days power for the whole of the UK being lost in 2022. Turning on gas fired power stations to make up for this lost energy added £590 million to UK energy bills and resulted in 1.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.*

The Junction 27 Energy Hub is Mid-Devon’s first Battery Energy Storage project. It is located nearby existing road, rail and electrical infrastructure at Junction 27 of the M5, 7km to the east of Tiverton. Its developer, Clearstone Energy has committed to providing £2 million of funding over the lifetime of the project to support local community projects; tackle the cost of living crisis; and promote energy saving and renewable energy adoption.
